Explore the majestic highest peak in northern Mexico, located in Galeana, Nuevo León. Ideal for hiking, this route offers exciting challenges and breathtaking views of the Sierra Madre Oriental. Get ready for an unforgettable adventure in nature!
The start of the tour is located in the community called San Jose de Las Joyas. One way to get there is to take highway 57 Matehuala-Monterrey east toward Potosí, Galeana. Another and our favorite route is to go to San Antonio de Las Alazanas and take the exit in the direction of Ciénaga del Toro. The second alternative is more scenic.
The roads include long stretches of dirt, so it is recommended to ride in tall vehicles and preferably 4x4 vehicles, but this is not essential. When you arrive in the community of San José de Las Joyas you must introduce yourself to the locals. They will be happy to give you recommendations on how to climb the hill and even offer parking.
Depending on the roads you choose to get to the hill, the booths can cost up to 300 pesos round trip. Also, if the locals offered you parking spaces, consider leaving a tip.
During the ascent, you have practically no losses. It is a fairly busy route, with many brands and few variants. It even crosses sometimes with a dirt road that reaches the summit. However, you have to pay close attention when starting the descent, since there is another route that leads to the summit, which is also very busy, it also crosses several times with dirt roads (cobblestone) and this route begins on another side of the mountain (the ejido 18 de Marzo). Although we can also get off here, we have to plan the logistics to be transported from March 18 to San José de las Joyas, since it is 16 km between the two towns.
Level 5, this route offers us just over 900m of positive slope, spread over 5.6 km (climb only). Level 5 of physical difficulty covers a range of 800m and 1000m of positive slope, making it comparable to some routes in the metropolitan area (Pico UDEM, La UVE, etc.).
